The
Costa Brava
is on the Northern coast of Catalonia, bordered by
the Pyrenees
and extending from Portbou to Blanes. It includes the areas Alto Ampurdán
(Alt Empordá) and Bajo Ampurdán (Baix Empordá) in the province of Gerona
(Girona) and La Selva (La Selva) in Catalonia (Catalunya). Its name is often translated as
wild coast,
but brava carries a hint of something more than wild, - perhaps savage or even mean.
Certainly it has a rich and varied landscape. In places rugged cliffs interrupt the rich vegetation and
beaches of fine golden sand
border the blue-green sea. This combined with a pleasant
sunny climate
and a feeling of history makes it attractive to large numbers of visitors every year.
